Counselling is an umbrella term that covers a range of talking therapies. It is delivered by a trained practitioner who works with a client over the short or long term to help him/her to develop self knowledge, self esteem and the ability to take control of his or her own life. Counselling may be concerned with addressing and helping clients to resolve specific issues, making decisions, coping with crises and painful life events, working through conflict or improving relationships with others. Counselling may be generic ie a broad range of techniques are used or may be specific ie it uses a specific counselling model such as psychodynamic or interpersonal counselling.
